Laboratory 3: Computer Analysis
20104
Laboratory #3:
Computer Analysis
Objectives:
This exercise is intended to provide familiarity with computer analysis of electrical circuits. It
focuses on interpretation of results obtained from a commercial circuit analysis program.
Introduction:
The analysis of electronic circuits can be expensive in both time and money, especially as cir-
cuitry becomes complicated with many and varied components. In this course and in the parent
ECE 2070 class you will be required to learn a number of robust techniques to analyze and char-
acterize circuits. While you must learn to perform those techniques manually, there are also
computer tools available to help by checking analyses or by analyzing complicated circuits.
The dominant programs of this type are referred to as SPICE (Simulation Program with Inte-
grated Circuit Emphasis), a general purpose analog electronic circuit simulator. Such programs
are commonly used in IC and board-level design to check the integrity of circuit designs and to
predict circuit behavior.
The upper-level electronics courses in ECE are using the latest version of B2 SPICE from Beige
Bag Software (http://www.beigebag.com/). This laboratory will use a simpler, but still powerful,
free version of the software.
Pre-Lab:
Well before the meeting of your laboratory section, you must download B2 SPICE software and
install it on your personal laptop computer. A free version (Version 4 Lite 4.2.14 ) that is ade-
quate for our very limited tasks is available for download at Beige Bag Software’s web site
http://www.beigebag.com/adv4_lite.htm or at the CNET site http://www.download.com/B2-
Spice-A-D-Lite/3000-6677_4-10377438.html . Install the software after you have downloaded it.
Familiarize yourself with the basic operation of the program by using the program’s HELP |
HELP CONTENTS. After taking a quick look at the OVERVIEW, work through the tutorial ANA-
LOG TUTORIAL #1. This tutorial will teach you the basics of using the program.
Procedure:
The basic procedure to use B2 SPICE for the analysis of circuits is the following:
1. Open the B2 SPICE program:
2. Place the devices on the circuit layout screen
3. Draw the connecting wires
4. Set the component properties
5. Simulate the circuit
6. Save the circuit
Of course, it is advisable to save your work frequently when creating the circuits.
